This review of Nizam’s was written for Zomato around August, 2011, almost five years back. This post is an effort to pull this review from Zomato.
My rating: 4 / 5
“Really, no AC? Yeah.
No free Wifi zone? Yeah.
No live music, no outdoor seating? Yeah.”
That was the conversation between a friend of mine from Bangalore and me, he being all curious about the place he has so much heard about, and got surprised when I informed him how 1947ish the place may seem to him and etc.
That’s Nizam’s for all of us.
If you are in Kolkata, and want to get the taste of real Tandoor items and authentic Biryani dishes, ‘Nizam’s’ is the place for you. Situated in the Hogg street of the New Market area, Nizam’s is as famous among foodies as Zomato also is, if not more.
The very few times I went there, the Chicken Biryani, along with Mutton Bhuna was the must among the orders. For Beef enthusiasts, this is one of the places in Kolkata, where you will get a wide range of Beef dishes, namely rice based Biryani dishes (including Hyderabadi counterparts) and a wide array of side dishes as well.
The service is good with waitors in traditional white and red turban attires will attend you, and voila, they are fast enough not to make you wait for eternity for your orders to come. In times of hesitation, even they will be too enthusiastic to help you chose the perfect dish on the basis of your needs.
But one thing for sure, Nizam’s is never empty. You will see huge numbers of people always going in and out. If you are attending in a team, you will certainly need to wait for sometime before getting seats.
The food quality, the service, the authenticity of the dishes will never disappoint you. At the end of your main course dishes, please do try their Firni. You won’t regret.
Recommended dishes to try:
Biryani(s), with all its types
Mutton Bhuna, Mutton Roganjosh
Chicken butter dishes
The chicken/mutton/beef rolls
Firni as dessert
